What’s New at Hollywood Studios

Welcome to this month’s Blogorail Red Loop. Today we are all of the new magic you can experience at Walt Disney World in 2016.

what's new

If you have not been to Hollywood Studios in a few years, you will be in for a surprise! Since Hollywood Studios is my favorite park, I am happy to see some much needed updates as well as the intrigue of new attractions. There have already been major changes and there will be more new and exciting changes to come over the next few years. The first major change you will notice is that Sorcerer Mickey’s hat has been removed. Love it or hate it, it is now officially gone forever. The next change will be as a result of the major announcement at the D23 Expo, that Hollywood Studios would be getting a Star Wars Land and a Toy Story Land, which you can watch that official announcement here. With this will come a lot of closings, but will bring new restaurants, attractions and shows over the next few years.

No one likes change, but at Disney World change is necessary to stay ahead of trends and technology. Hollywood Studios has had a lot of major closings of some beloved attractions to make way for the construction for Star Wars Land and Toy Story Land, which have been upsetting to a lot of Disney fans. So far The Backlot Tour, The Magic of Disney Animation, The American Idol Experience, Light, Motors, Action!, the Streets of America and Honey I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure have just been a few of the casualties. For the most part, I have been fine with the changes that have come to Disney World with the exception of a few I threw a temper tantrum about (Kungaloosh! RIP Adventure’s Club). So when I heard that the Streets of America were closing and 2015 was going to be the last year for The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights, I knew I had to go see it for the first and last time! I was glad I did as this was one seasonal attraction that will be hard to replace.

Star Wars

While most of these closings are under construction, a few of these attractions have been replaced with new attractions. The newest attraction that has opened is the Star Wars Launch Bay, which is located in the building that was The Magic Disney Animation. Star Wars Launch Bay is where you will find unique Star Wars merchandise, see movie props and displays, play games and watch a short video with interviews of cast and crew of the Star Wars saga. But the best part of the Star Wars Launch Bay are the character meet and greets. You can interact with wandering Jawas, hug Chewbacca and learn the ways of the dark side from Kylo Ren. There is also a new 10 min show called Star Wars: Path to the Jedi at the ABC Sound Studio. This film fuses together iconic scenes from all seven Star Wars movie and will move any major fan to tears, which is what happened to me. There is also a new Star Wars themed fireworks show called Symphony of the Stars: A Galactic Spectacular. The last Star Wars changes are updates to current attractions. Star Tours has now been updated to include scenes from The Force Awakens and Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple now includes a villian from Star Wars Rebels, the Seventh Sister.

Along with the new Star Wars meet and greets, there have been new characters meets added around the park. Minnie Mouse is in red carpet attire is ready for pictures with you on Commissary Lane. Also Mickey in his Sorcerers Apprentice outfit is there as well over meet and greet opportunities.  After that if you head on over to the Echo Lake area, at Celebrity Spotlight, you will find Olaf from Frozen ready for warm hugs. Speaking of Frozen, you can catch the rest of the Frozon characters at For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration at the Hyperion Theater.

The only new food update is that Starbucks opened up at the Trolley Car Cafe, which is at the corner of Hollywood Blvd and Sunset Blvd. There you can get Starbucks beverages, snacks, bakery items and desserts. There are also some limited breakfast and lunch items you can get there as well. There will be new eateries for Star Wars Land and Toy Story Land but no opening dates for those so we will have to wait for those.

Well those are all the changes for now and there will be more to come! What changes are you looking forward too? What changes will you miss?

  1. Times are certainly changing at Hollywood Studios. I know it is only a matter of time before it’s returned to its former glory. Looking forward to that day.

    1. Yes, they are! There is going to be a lot of construction going on right now so I can’t wait for it to be all done.

  2. I have always loved Hollywood Studios, and am both enjoying the changes, but also lamenting the past a bit! I’ll miss Osborne Lights so much, but love the new Star Wars stuff!
